If you are planning a trip to Disneyland in the future, then please don’t do it how my parents did it for us when I was a kid. We could barely afford the park entry prices and as a result we had to take all our own food and drink in to the park each day. When the other kids were having some Disney character fries and meals, we were having baloney sandwiches our mother made that morning. We did Disneyland on the tightest and shortest shoestring available. Our hotel was so far away from the park we got up in the dark to catch a bus that took us for a 2 hour drive to the entry. My brother and his family had asked us about a year ago if we would join them on a trip of a lifetime at Disneyland. We enthusiastically said yes, and all we could talk about for months was how much each of us were saving and what we would do first when we got there. We were acting more like our kids who were just as excited to be going. About 3 months out of the date we were to book flights and accommodation, my brother called and was miserable. He said that they just had not saved enough and even if they didn’t spend a dime between now and the booking date, they would still not be able to afford to go. We were heartbroken. I remember my father taking me to Disneyland as a child and being too young to really appreciate it. I recall that for years after he would refer to the vacation as costing the equivalent to a deposit for a house. Well, many years later I have two small girls who dream about and fantasize about Disneyland, too. My husband and I have been talking about making the trip but the cost is frightening us both away from the idea. Finally we were in the financial position to be able to take our kids to Disneyland. It was something that my folks were never able to do when we were growing up, and I was determined to take my kids before they got too old. Well, our youngest is 6 and the eldest is 14 but you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the amount of excitement they are both feeling right now. I have to admit though, the thought of all those thousands of dollars we are going to spend is really daunting. There’s a big part of me that feels reluctant to do it.
